The Right Start! – Transition and Information Services for the New Executive

Transitioning into a new job is a challenge for everyone, especially as a new executive in a key local government position. Often, the person is thrust into a situation of authority with a very limited time to ramp up their knowledge, become familiar with their surroundings and begin charting their course for a successful beginning.

From experience, I can tell you that walking into a new office and then seeking information from within the organization is difficult. Literally, your first weeks or months on the job can be a huge “easter egg” hunt for key information and organizational disclosure. The most loaded question you will get on day one is the smiling face walking into your office asking “what do you need?”

The Right Start is a service to facilitate a successful beginning where the new executive has a complete information package and briefing developed for them prior to day one of their start.

The program includes the following:

  • Information Packet: A complete information package on the organization including key financial data, functional organizational descriptions and charts, strategic plans with status, budget summaries, capital improvement programs and an overview of key initiatives under way.
  • Briefing: A briefing on the package in the form of a presentation outlining key information.
  • Onboarding: A first week onboarding schedule designed to get the new executive up to speed on everything from meeting key staff, their computer login, a tour of key facilities to their employee benefits program.
  • Facilitation: Approximately in the first month, a facilitated workshop with the new executive, the City Council and key staff to begin teambuilding and establish a first year work program.

Having an experienced City Manager developing a comprehensive transition package with the information which the new executive needs, coordination of a quality onboarding  then the facilitation of some initial team building and goal setting for the first year will help get things off to the “Right Start!”
